traditionally most valentines days for us are celebrated mildly. usually a handmade card and an inexpensive gift. this year was no different, with me gifting ben a chambray shirt on clearance from target and some candy heart lollipops. it was the typical love day celebration with the exception of one event.
we met with a Foster Care agency at our home yesterday to see if we were a good fit for each other. this was the third agency we've been in contact with since january. when we began our journey towards adoption in november we received much advice from friends that the agency we select would be the most important. ben and i figured as much but didn't quite understand that not all agencies operate the same. sure the basics are taken care of with uniformed consistantcy but the way they interact with the foster/adoptive parents varies from agency to agency. since our gentle turn away in january i have been very guarded towards agencies. we're learning first hand just how much red tape goes along with the whole process just to get started.
it is with great pleasure, after experiencing a very relaxed and open interview, i tell you we selected an agency to proceed with! what's fantastic is that they are looking forward to working with us just as much as we are with them! once they left our home we got straight to work on filling out all of the necessary paperwork, ben's finishing up the rest as i type this. immediately we drove downtown to the Department of Economic Security to get our fingerprints taken care of. since that is the most lengthy part of the certification process, taking eight to ten weeks to receive, we wanted to get that part out of the way. beginning the first week of April we'll start all of the classes needed to become licensed foster parents and certified to adopt. we'll be going through an accelerated program too, what traditionally takes ten weeks to complete will take us five. before Summers start we'll be all set and waiting on a match!
i can not tell you how good it feels to have the agency selection under our belt. there is still a long road ahead of us until we bring home a child but to have the agency selected seems to be the biggest hurdle cleared. of all the valentines day gifts i could have chosen to receive in the year 2013 this would have been my top. on a day dedicated to celebrating love we became one step closer to bringing home our child. someone we've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of so we can smother in love!
oh, and then my valentine made me lunch. pretty sure i'll keep him around.
